Unified Execution Engine for a Canadian Construction Subcontractor

An online system used by field personnel was needed, but available software products did not fit the need. By leveraging its low code technology platform Stragiliti, as well as its rapid implementation methodology, Kallos had the capability to custom build automated processes for this customer rapidly.

The Company

The solution was delivered to a drywalling company that undertakes subcontracting work for major construction firms in Ontario. It has over 700 employees or crew, working in over 50 jobsites across the state. Most of their buildings are high-rises.

The Challenge

The construction activities by field personnel like supervisors, foremen and workers are executed either manually or via a form-based system. This leads to inaccuracies, delays, duplicate effort, and opportunities for fraud. An online system used by field personnel was needed, but available software products did not fit the need. Custom solution quotes from vendors were expensive, time-consuming and even risky to execute.

Solution

Kallos Technologies Corporation, Canada, along with its associated companies in Singapore and India have delivered numerous Unified Execution Engines for various verticals including Construction. By leveraging its low code technology platform Stragiliti, as well as its rapid implementation methodology, Kallos had the capability to custom build automated processes for this customer rapidly. The focus was not just on automating processes but also improving business processes during the transition. The following processes followed by personnel were automated.

  • Modelling jobsites structures, tasks, material, labour codes, and rates

  • Material Requisitions including planning, ordering, and receiving

  • Generating activities as per labour codes

  • Calculating wages automatically

  • Approval workflows

  • Sign in / out attendance

  • Additional work tracking

  • Recording new hires

  • Expense reimbursements

  • Other processes like delay tracking

The Delivery Approach

Kallos used its proven iterative agile process in delivering the solution which led to rapid delivery with high quality, resulting in a solution that met the business expectations of the customer. The delivery approach followed is described below:

The detailed requirements are understood via direct interactions with key users. A detailed process and organization model of the solution is validated and a semi-working prototype is rapidly assembled. Stragiliti leverages its low code platform so that the semi-working prototype application is mostly autogenerated. With this approach the exact solution is arrived at quickly because users can they see what they are going to get and correct it early in the delivery cycle.

After a few rapid iterations, the scope and rules to be developed are completed rapidly, thereby ensuring that business processes match the intended solution accurately.

As a solution that was already reviewed by key users during earlier stages, acceptance rates and implementation success rates are high.

Results

The following are the positive results from implementing the system.

  • Far less time spent in calculating wage sheets for employees, which has to be done weekly

  • Automation and accuracy in utilization, labour codes and rates used, as well as approval via a workflow, ensures that disputes over pay calculation is minimized or avoided.

  • Improved utilization of the workforce due to better planning, scheduling, and allocation of work.

  • Material requisition occurs accurately avoiding waste or extra inventory buildup.

  • Ensures that the right materials appear for the right service avoiding delays.

  • Billing early, billing on time and billing without missing normal or additional activities avoids revenue leakage.

  • Automates workflows between various jobsites and the corporate office to accelerate many processes like extended work authorization, new hires, and expense reimbursements.

The combined impact of all these benefits across all job sites will lead to improved delivery through put, executed at lower costs and lower effort and with quicker turnaround time. The net result will be direct improvements to the topline and bottom-line of the company, with a quick return on the investment made.
